This Privacy Policy describes how your personal information is handled when you use the Private Notes mobile application (the "App"). Because Private Notes is built for absolute privacy, our core principle is that your data stays on your device.

1. INFORMATION WE DO NOT COLLECT

To provide a truly private experience, we have fundamentally designed the App to avoid collecting your personal data:

  • We do not collect, store, or transmit your notes or text inputs.

  • We do not collect, store, or transmit your AI chat history.

  • We do not collect, store, transmit, or record your voice inputs, microphone audio, or generated speech.

  • We do not require an account, email address, or registration to use the App.

2. SENSITIVE PERMISSIONS AND LOCAL PROCESSING

All core functionality of the App happens exclusively on your Android device. To provide certain features, the App requires access to specific device hardware. None of the data accessed by these permissions ever leaves your device.

  • 2.1 Microphone & Audio Data (RECORD_AUDIO permission):
    The App requests access to your device's microphone strictly to enable Speech-to-Text (STT) and Voice Mode features. When you use these features, your audio data is processed in real-time by your device's local operating system. We do not record, save, or upload your audio to our servers or any third-party cloud providers. The audio data is immediately discarded from memory once the text is generated.

  • 2.2 Camera:
    The App may request access to your camera to allow you to attach photos or scan documents into your notes. All images captured are stored locally on your device and are never transmitted to us or any external servers.

  • 2.3 Notes and Semantic Search:
    Your notes and the embeddings generated for semantic search are stored securely in your device's local database. They are never uploaded to a cloud server.

  • 2.4 Local AI Chat:
    When you interact with your notes using the AI assistant, the App uses on-device Large Language Models (such as Gemma models). Your prompts and notes are processed locally entirely by your device's hardware.

3. INFORMATION WE MAY COLLECT

The only information that may be collected is standard, anonymized operational data required to maintain the App:

  • 3.1 Usage and Device Information:
    If you opt-in to standard Android crash reporting through your device settings, we may receive anonymized data including:

    • Device type and model

    • Operating system version

    • Anonymous crash logs and error reports

This data contains no personal information, audio data, notes, or chat history. It is used exclusively to debug technical issues and improve App stability.

4. THIRD-PARTY SERVICES

Unlike traditional AI applications, Private Notes does not send your chats, voice inputs, or notes to third-party cloud AI providers like OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google Cloud.

The App utilizes standard Google Play Services (such as billing for Pro subscriptions), which are governed by Google's Privacy Policy.

5. DATA SHARING

Because we do not collect or host your personal data, notes, audio, or chat history, we have no personal data to sell, rent, trade, or share with third parties, AI providers, advertisers, or law enforcement.

6. DATA RETENTION AND DELETION

You are in complete control of your data retention.

  • Your notes, embeddings, and chat history remain on your physical device until you choose to delete them within the App.

  • If you clear the App's storage in your Android settings, or if you uninstall the App, all associated local data, notes, and databases are permanently deleted by the Android operating system. We cannot recover this data for you.

7. DATA SECURITY

While we do not transmit your data over the internet, we rely on Android's native application sandboxing to protect your local database from unauthorized access by other applications on your device. We recommend securing your device with a strong passcode or biometric authentication to further protect your physical device.

8. CHILDREN'S PRIVACY

The App is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. Because the App operates entirely offline and requires no account, we have no mechanism to knowingly collect personal information from any user, including children under 13.

9. YOUR DATA RIGHTS

Depending on your location (such as under the GDPR or CCPA), you have rights regarding your personal data. Because all your personal data resides exclusively on your physical device and not on our servers, you can exercise your rights to access, correct, or delete your data directly within the App's interface. Because we do not possess your data, we cannot fulfill manual requests to export or delete your notes.

10. CHANGES TO THIS PRIVACY POLICY

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for legal, operational, or regulatory reasons. We will notify you of any material changes by updating the "Last updated" date on this page.
